College Stress Video

This was my first project in Art 75. Surprisingly, before I went to college, I took film classes, but never went far as my life forced me to abandon personal projects. I wanted to hammer home the idea of what it feels like, that first semester away. Alone from friends, family, likely struggling. When I filmed this, I was there. I was alone, in a dormatory where I could barely stretch my arms before touching the wall. I was living with a complete stranger, not to mention I had no supports.
I feel as if people often travel to darker places once that door is opened. Once you realize how alone you are you think about the world. Every issue that is out of your control. The closer you are to your young adult years, the more you fear it, the more powerless you feel. It is a scary feeling, one of being powerless. Knowing how many things are going wrong with the world, and knowing how little power you have as an individual to stop it. Seeing the rapid paces of climate change, seeing and hearing about human suffering, and knowing that at the end of the day, you still have to pretend to be fit enough to work. It drives people mad. Student stress climbs higher each year, it climbs with student debt. College students are often overpaying and entirely unprepared for what college actually has to offer them. They are alone.
